U.S. Senate Unanimously Recognizes Harlem Festival Featured In ‘Summer of Soul’

To celebrate the festival, Questlove's Summer of Soul documentary was nominated for both an Oscar and Grammy. The U.S. Senate gave its "unanimous agreement" on Tuesday (May 24) to a resolution honouring the landmark 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival during the final weekend of June. In 1967, when the "Black Woodstock" first began, there was no way to forecast that it would become as popular as it is now. An annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which began in 1970, will be recognized by Congress's upper chamber. The last weekend of June 2022 has been designated as a "commemoration of the first weekend of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival." To Be Young, Gifted and Black" and "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" by Nina Simone and Mahalia Jackson were cited in the resolution as examples of "a transformation in Black culture, consciousness, and expression" and "a trend away from performances meant to be a palatable for white audiences." As a result of the majority decision, "Senators are encouraged to prepare suitable events that support...the aims of the [festival]...and encourages local governments in the United States to create collaborations with local Black artists, entertainers, and activists." Interestingly, the Harlem Festival of Culture (HFC) will be launched in 2023 with New Edition's Michael Bivins as its Creative Director, based on its precursor of the same name.
