Anthony Anderson Will Not Return For Season 22 Of ‘Law Order’
Anthony Anderson will not be returning to NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for Season 22.
According to Deadline, the actor who plays Detective Kevin Bernard has decided not to return to the popular law show after repeating his role for Season 21.
Anderson signed a one-year contract last year, signaling that he would be less likely to return this season. Anderson is said to have signed on to help Dick Wolf with the relaunch of the original series, with plans to move on after that.
Fans of the show are surprised by the revelation because Anderson's departure was not hinted at in the recent Season 21 finale. The previous episode closed with Detective Bernard (Anderson) and his partner Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan) investigating the murder of an off-duty police officer, a case that will almost certainly be resolved in the following season.
Sam Waterston, another classic Law & Order star, has also inked a one-year agreement for Season 21. Although the veteran actor was onstage for NBCUniversal's upfront, which featured programs and talent for the forthcoming season, it is uncertain whether he will return for Season 22.
Dick Wolf and writer-showrunner Rick Eid's new Law & Order will follow the old bisected format that explores "the cops who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the culprits."
After eight seasons on ABC's black-ish, Anderson stepped down as star and executive producer.
