Jussie Smollett’s Directorial Debut ‘B-Boy Blues’ Headed To BET+
The big screen will see the directorial debut of Jussie Smollett.
After making its world premiere at the 2021 American Black Film Festival last year, Variety revealed that B-Boy Blues has found a home at BET+. The Narrative Feature Fan Favorite Award went to the film during the festival.
Pride Month will have its television premiere on June 9th. The film's producer, Mona Scott-Young, and her firm, Monami Entertainment, have signed on — Jussie Smollett’s Directorial Debut ‘B-Boy Blues’ Headed To BET+.
"B-Boy Blues is a stunningly daring, humorous, uplifting romance, and I was happy to join with Jussie to assist this fantastic film to achieve further awareness," Young stated in a press release. It's common for people to fall in love and fight for it, and we're so thankful to BET+ for putting a tremendous spotlight on the still underrepresented black LGBTQ+ community and presenting this wonderful love story to an even bigger audience."
An "intersection of class and culture" occurs when a college-educated journalist from Brooklyn and a bike messenger from Harlem fall in love, according to the synopsis of B-Boy Blues. The screenplay was co-written by Smollett and James Earl Hardy, the author of the novel that served as the basis for the film. Timothy Richardson, Ledisi, Brandee Evans, Heather B, Marquise Vilson, Jabari Redd, Broderick Hunter, and Thomas Mackie are among the cast members.
In a statement to Variety, BET+ exec VP/GM Devin Griffin said, "We are committed to expressing the richness of the Black experience, especially that of the LGBTQ+ community." We can all identify with the complexities of love in "B-Boy Blues," which is an "artful, heartbreaking picture."
In March, he was sentenced to 150 days in prison, 30 months of felony probation, and ordered to pay more than $120,000 in restitution and a $25,000 fine for falsely reporting a hate crime.
